Could we stop this endless loop?

Tavi has nothing new to say and she is not a style rookie. She is a conspicuous consumer like all the other gals who read Vogue, Elle, Nylon, Dazed..blah blah blah.
She is a fashion rookie perhaps. Style is something entirely different from Fashion-Slave.

I'm sure she's a sweet little girl, but the media frenzy around her is just silly and rather exploitative and robbing her of her youth which is being spent being famous. Magazines like Teen Vogue and nitwits like Miley Cyrus are shoved at teen girls as role models and How-to manuals...How to be a Shopper! and be like everyone else while buying crap you don't need and don't want. That's the job of Mainstream Media...and the Mainstream but faux-indie Bloggerati.

Mainstream media and the Bloggerati are making her famous...because ...
She is 1000% mainstream. Nothing wrong with that, if that's her choice.

Just a few pages of reading her blog reveals these designer namedrops....Rei Kawakubo...Proenza Schouler...Miu Miu...Celine...Comme des Garcons...Marc Jacobs, and farther back..."Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons, Vivienne Westwood, Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte, Tao Kurihara of Tao, Alexander McQueen, Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren of Viktor & Rolf, Nozomi Ishiguro, Yohji Yamamoto, Maison Martin Margiela, Junya Watanabe, Luella Bartley of Luella, and Gareth Pugh, to name a few *ahem*, but I am always discovering new ones which I adore as well. Right now I'm very into Sandra Backlund, especially after happily receiving my Yokoo scarf. And of course, the fake Karl Lagerfield."

So GOOD Grief people! She LOOOOves designers. Just like millions of other girls/women. Nothing special there.
And now the designers send her stuff for free, so she blogs about those designers that send her stuff, and they send her stuff for free, so she blogs about those designers.......
detect a pattern here?

She talks about the same subjects all the other young fashion bloggers blog about, such as the Future of Digital Fashion Blogging, DIY mixed with HighEnd Fashion, Fat Models Are Good, Skinny Models Are Bad, pervy photographers, blah blah blah.

I liked her better when she first started ...when she dressed like characters which are more like her little girl personality, because she is ...NEWS FLASH... a little girl.

All children collect and begin to really develop a love for their hobbies at about age 10 -11. Her fashion Love is not unique and not weird either.

Her take on Thrift Store shopping is the same stuff all the other fashion bloggers are saying....and NO, Salvation Army,ST. Vincent de Paul and Goodwill are not in business to sell things cheap to poor people....SA, Vinnies, and Good are there primarily to sell things to middle class and lower middle class people to fund Do-Gooder programs that help poor people. BIG difference! I know this to be true because I read like, um, history. Now, of course, everyone shops the thrifts...Rich and not-so-rich alike because it's Trendy !!!!

But this recent online blurb about starting up Sassy the magazine again really gave me pause.....

Dazed Digital: What’s your big ideaCity talk about?
Tavi: It’s basically about what Sassy magazine would look like today. Because there aren’t any counter cultures, so what would make it subversive?

DD: And what is that?
Tavi: It would be subversive not by latching onto a subversive band or clothing style, because those, you know, there isn’t any counter culture. It would be subversive just in that it would be honest and tell teenage girls that, like, our opinions matter and to be ourselves and stuff. Other magazines, I feel, don’t succeed in doing that. There’s insincerity.

OH GOOD GOD!
Yes, Tavi there are plenty of countercultures....People who eschew consumerism, homeschooling parents, folks who grow their own food, folks who work from home, people who bicycle/public transit to work when they don't have to, people who dumpster dive, people who make their way in the world without corporate jobs, artists and musicians.....

And, bottom line, you can't have it both ways: "...tell teenage girls that, like, our opinions matter and to be ourselves and stuff." AND be a slave to high-end Designer consumerism. Choose a side. That's the clever thing to do.

funkoma has stuff and bloggers must be truthy

Real actual vintage hot rod rat rod car club Puyallup Valley Raceway 1962...

and now on etsy !

So now, when indiecult vintage sends Susie Bubble a bunch of free stuff, Susie Bubble must tell us that indiecult vintage sent her stuff for free...when Susie Bubble goes on and on about what "great stuff" indiecult has....or what great stuff Nastygal has....

It was a huge surprise to me that bloggers got sent free stuff...no one ever sent me free stuff, but then I'm not the brown nose type, and I guess that was easy to figure out....
The F.T.C will rule that bloggers must disclose the freebies if they write about "endorsements and testimonials" concerning the freebies.

"The F.T.C. said that beginning on Dec. 1, bloggers who review products must disclose any connection with advertisers, including, in most cases, the receipt of free products and whether or not they were paid in any way by advertisers, as occurs frequently. The new rules also take aim at celebrities, who will now need to disclose any ties to companies, should they promote products on a talk show or on Twitter."

People Picked Me !

One of the many reasons I love etsy is for its artistic vibe...cool, clean and modern and yet....the handcrafted item is the Star of the Show....But they have huge category of vintage...housewares, home decor, books...all manner of the old stuff.......
It is always eye candy...and one of the most eye candiest features is The Treasury.
It's a part of etsy where etsy-lovers make beautiful lists of their favorites on the site....
A wonderful feminine steampunk vintage wool and satin 30s/40s coat of mine was featured recently by a Treasury Maker.... PickleValentine...

The Treasury is titled Chocolate and Licorice...
here's the link....mmmmm....tasty!

The Treasury expires Monday January 19 at 5:47 pm....
I guarantee...You'll crave more Treasury on etsy....
click here for the vintage clothing section....

(and a 60s pink spring suit was picked for the etsy widget by Carol, our Vintage Bulletin blogQueen, this week!)

Thanks for coming down!

and seeing us on Wednesday.....the first of many many non-events/events we Broadway Babies......will plan for you in the months to come. Lots of folks came down to see us and spread a little cash in downtown T-Town.....
Big Props to Melanie.....the beautiful raven-haired Vanity owner !
Mel's not on our block (up on 6th) but she knows a good time when she sees one for sure.....
All of us in T-Town that sell the vintage and retro are a fresh conspiracy of sorts....We want to take over the world!

What's the RAIN doing here ????
Waaah.....I want my hot weather for Hot Rod A Ramaaaaaa..... Man dig these vids.....FAn -f'n-ing Tastic View of our beautiful little city.....

back to this:
Tacoma is an easy town to get around in....all the vintage and retro shops are within a few miles of each other. Julie's at Urban Xchange down on Pacific near the UWT......Cedar and Jim up at Rector's next to Jason Lee on 6th.......and the world's largest concentration of Vintage and Retro indie shops on one block !!

Since we opened ....thanks to my relentless blabbing (thanks Meghan!) and hard work (thanks Jennifer!)
we're making tons of people happy. Some drop in to see what's going on with the Rampart bldg.....some wanna know where's David? (up on 6th at Vintage Arts)
and some are just amazed at what is packed inside....
pics will arrive in next weeks post about the shop.....
more props to defunked......go read a fun blog about vintage T shirts.....you know we love 'em......

Crap! We've Been Tagged.....

By the gas company....So I chalked it....
Hey, did you know that Tacoma is a tiny tiny town.......Like a Richard Scarry kinda town.....I tried to see the show at The Helm ....but I was overwhelmed by the subject so after chatting with K, NC & J.....I just had to go.
That's how overwhelming it was......
So CHALK !!!!
I didn't see ErikUrbanist.....where was he? I see him alll the time..everywhere!!!!
We began like this.......

And the first thing I chalked was the gas company tag left in the street......

Clearly.....Everything I learned about Chalking, I learned in Kindergarten.....

Got to meet Laura H....wow! The amazing Andrea.....another wow! The makeup and hair created for the fashion show was mesmerizing......
And Erik, the Booster, shot me.....and Laura.....I always look red...like red wine. And really, it is OK to disagree on issues.....that really gets the Ideas a'flowing......
Erik knows this......(hellooo) Winky!

Always a pleasure to see Trish and Julie.....and so many more that I didn't get to say Hi! to.....

Now being part of the downtown scene of Art.....Music......Merryment.....and General TacUrban Life.....

Mark was there too.....He spent a lot of time chatting with Ryan.....who just arrived in Our Fair City from the other Washington.....DC .....that is....
Ryan was just hired by Lemay to oversee the proper restoration of The Cars.....
That is a big Job.....Ryan stopped in to amocat/funkoma checking out the n'hood....we meet so many people late in the day.....(so much is closed after 5....not us!)
I told Ryan about the party and he decided to go.. I think it was a wonderful and weird and wild intro to the best side of Tacoma.....

I'm biased.....but Antique Row....that chunk of Broadway is the best street in Tacoma.....
The only other street that might vie for that title.....

was/is 11th Street.....Murray Morgan bridge into the Tideflats......
that street...that bridge...that destination...is the Heart of Tacoma...
to me, it's the Real Gateway.....

fuggedabout Pt. Defiance....Job Carr's cabin....BORING.

We got it all....From the Stadium district to the Eastside as it curves around the Dome... and back around up the hill and over the E. 34th st Bridge....and down Tacoma Ave past the Cop Shop, thru Old Town to Stadium......and back down Broadway.....
Ummm, Yummmmmmmy !
