there's a lot of fashion
that is just plain stupid. April Fools Day has just passed but I don't think this stupid model and her stupid pants are meant to be a joke...I think someone thinks this is "edgy" and just perfect for an "urban experience" such as eating bacon cupcakes and local artisan beer swigging.

for all my salt, I am a hopeless romantic, and I hopelessly hope people will stop being dumb. I adore this artist in full bloom......the dreamy Bouguereau. Long long hair....I flirted with short bobs from time to time, but I always default to Mormon sister-wife long hair.

the last time we got this excited over braids was the ones Wednesday Addams sported in all the incarnations of The Addams Family.

It started with one sexy bathing suit in her wardrobe. On the first day of Barbie's life, she was clothed in nothing but a sexy black-and-white striped bathing suit and spike heels!
And she was marketed as a doll for girls about the age of 10 ! When Barbie made her debut at the American Toy Fair in New York City, she changed the history of toy dolls for girls.
Before Barbie, dolls were made to look like children and babies. Round tummies, big eyes, and helplessness. Since all girls were destined to be mommies, teachers, nurses or prostitutes, this made perfect sense.
...funny thing is....Barbie was a modeled after a "modern woman". She was copied from a German doll named Bild Lili. But Barbie has always been a virgin and will always remain an "official virgin", even though she's been dating Ken since 1961.

So he kept the face, added a ponytail and a curvy woman's body and called his creation "Lilli". She sat in a fortune-teller's tent asking: "Can't you tell me the name and address of this rich and handsome man?" The cartoon was an immediate success so Beuthien had to draw new ones each day.
Lilli was post-war, sassy and ambitious and had no reservations talking about sex."

Seeing the trees in spite of the forest
I'm sifting through decades of stuff. Family stuff. Kid stuff. Old records...the tax kind and the vinyl kind...
Old books. Old shoes. Old furniture.
Old ways.
Old memories.

I think of Robert Frost....very often...his poems, his words....saunter across my mind.
His poem, Miles to Go (actually called Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening), is a favorite because it gives me energy, hope and keeps me going when I really want to say "Oh forget it all...it doesn't matter!"
Art, and nature, always revive my spirits.
When Robert Frost was a farmer he would load a wagon and hitch a horse and clop to town to sell his produce. One time, he needed to sell to afford presents for Christmas (who can't relate to that?).
He sold nothing on a cold snowy day and had to return home.
So sad, so overwhelmed with helplessness, he stopped his wagon near a snowy field of birch trees and cried and cried. His horse shook his neck and tinkled his horse bells, and Mr. Frost gathered his wits and carried on.
Oh, lordy, how many times have I despaired ....the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel seems, too often, to have been vanquished.

Born Robert Lee Frost on March 26, 1874 in San Francisco, his family moved to Lawrence Mass. in spring 1885. His grandfather offered to take in the Frost family after Robert's father died. After graduation from Lawrence High, Frost attended Harvard for 2 years.
His grandfather bought a farm in Derry, New Hampshire, where Robert farmed for nine years, writing his poems whenever he could spare some time. The farm didn't prosper so he worked as an English teacher in New Hampshire.
In 1915 Frost bought another farm in New Hampshire and kept writing, and teaching, and lecturing. Today, this home is preserved as a museum.
He taught at Amherst College in Massachusetts and his poems became famous and profitable.

In 1924, he won the first of his many Pulitzer Prizes and became one of America's most beloved poets. Later in life, in 1940, Frost purchased a home in Florida...yes, the Winter Home!
He died in 1963 , and is buried in Bennington, Vermont. The epitaph on his gravestone is from one of his poems- "I had a lover's quarrel with the world."

Stop calling shirts with buttons "Button-down"
About 7 years ago* some moron on ebay started calling all shirts with ....buttons...down...the..front....a BUTTON DOWN SHIRT. No. it's. not.This ill-informed "fashion" editorial on Stylelist "The Classic White Button-Down: 5 Days/5 Ways", does not use a button-down shirt styled (?) 5 ways....they use a shirt that buttons down the front. Big Difference!
(not to mention, but I will, Leggings as Pants)
(and people who say "think" when they mean "imagine" or "remember")
Since I love the Classics ! mis-naming mistakes made by People With A Job in the Fashion/Styling/Writing industries, that don't know wtf they are talking about...really ----- me.....and if that is an actual button-down, please, tell me that it is. She could be wearing the buttons undone....In any case, the distinction needs to be made.
A century ago, Brooks Brothers popularized putting a button and buttonhole on the collar corner, and Viola! it's a button-down collar.

Beware!

elvis
My first 2 wheel bike* was an old 50s model with fat tires, fenders, a big saddle seat, and a wire basket. I got it in 4th grade, in 1963, just after I turned 9. Tom Roe painted it green, sparkle green, in his Auto Body Shop in Yountville, down Washington St, near the Catholic Church. As a special treat, my dad let me choose the color and I asked him to ask Tom to paint "Elvis" on the front fender.
Yeah, that's right.
I do love Elvis but not in the mindless white trash way. That's my Elvis tapestry, that's my Elvis tshirt Annie gave me (awesome!), and that's my Elvis watch. No really, I love Elvis, but not like that....

There's certainly many wonderful sad and evocative songs from the Big Band era, and the years of World War 2....but this one by Vera Lynn never fails to make me tear up....just a bit...after all these years...every time I hear it....Lynn's song in the final scene of Kubrick's 1964 film Dr. Strangelove, and was also used in the closing scenes of the 1986 BBC television serial The Singing Detective....and I love that series and Michael Gambon. oh yes. Songs by the Ink Spots were in it too...songs of my little childhood.
