Summer Afternoon...

Long sunny days ......long warm days....and I get lazier and slower....but a person has to eat! the garden is giving me potatoes, carrots, beans, radishes, beets, turnips, lots of greens...kale, lettuce and all the tops from beets and turnips too.

a fire to cook on outside is always tempting since the kitchen is hot and who wants to turn on the stove... the other day I chopped garden potatoes, carrots, turnips, beets, kale, greens, beans and some organic frozen corn and peppers and boiled it for an hour with some vegetable bouillon, cayenne pepper, regular ol' pepper (don't take it for granted...it's a good thing to toss in), and some dried thyme.
After an hour of simmering, I mixed some pancake mix with a bit of milk in a bowl, and dropped tablespoons of dough in the boiling soup, and walaa! Dumplings!
I learned that from mom...drop in lumps of dough and you thicken the soup and add a side dish all at the same time. At the end of simmering your soup, drop in dumpling dough, and cover and simmer for another 15 minutes. With all that yummy goodness from the garden, we topped the late  dinner with ice cream and pie. And Screwdrivers!

Here's what I planted in late spring, so I was thrilled to pull some tasty homegrowns the other day and eat....

I had to pull out the peas, and chop back the swiss chard, the kale and the pak choi....the hot weather is not a friend to them. Everything got watered deep and also got a douse of organic fertilizer.

The tomato plants are growing tall, and so are the sunflowers and the corn. The squash has blossoms....late summer is gonna taste great.

I love being barefoot in the kitchen in summer.....and I set up a cooking area outside. It is so cool,  (weather-wise and mood wise), to set a frying pan on the barbeque to fry some oysters and serve them with a cold green salad plucked from the garden in the morning.

Here's a look at the garden in early June. The lychnis, the shasta daisies, the nasturtiums, and the tomatoes planted on teepees made from branches cut from the winter damaged black locust trees...

Late last winter I set cardboard out on the sunny part of the lawn to kill the grass so I could plant tomato plants. I covered the ground with lots of manure and compost, covered it with cardboard and  then I put lawn clippings on top of that after the first mowings of the spring. Then, I cut a hole in the cardboard, set in my tomato plants, and fashioned teepees with branches wired together at the top.

One leg is held in place with an 18" length of iron rebar to hold them in place. This method is great for lazy er, busy gardeners. The cardboard/mulch arrangement holds in water and prevents weeding!
I water every 2 weeks by putting a trickling hose near the base of each tomato plant for about 10 minutes and also fertilize the ground right at the base of the plant. As the plant grows, I gently tie it to the branch. I have lots of blossoms and sooooon I'll have tiny tomatoes........and then Big Tomatoes.........Homegrown Tomatoes!!!!

Screwdriver: Simple. in a canning jar pint glass of orange juice, organic please ...oh a simple little thing...OJ, then I squish basil or mint leaves in the OJ with my fingers (I'm lazy), then add an ice cube or 2, a splash of lemonade, then pour in a jigger or 2 of vodka....the herb oil/leaves add a bit of extra tastiness to the summer Screwdriverand sip slowly in the shade.....

The Birthday Boy

First we had a breakfast at Dock Street Landing...now Rock the Dock. ...stupid name. Same dive with rearranged furniture. Ask for the veggie burger since it isn't listed on the menu.
We sat on the deck and had the most vegetarian things on the menu. Me, poppers, and Mark had a cocktail! Lucky him, since I volunteered to drive for the day I was sober until dinner time.

We watched the boats float by....someday that will be us sheeting and rigging....We saw 2 Oompa Loompas on one large sailboat.....so I figured it was the Willy Wonka cruise.

2 old folks sat on chairs at the stern, both wearing bright orange t-shirts while a dapper man pulled up the fenders and pointed out Thea Foss landmarks. I figured the dutiful son made Ma and Pa Midwestern wear the super-bright t-shirts in case they fell in they'd make good targets....I Jest!
The old folks were in life jackets. Bright Orange life jackets. Still.
Ooompa Loompa.
Just saying.....

Then we walked the docks and drooled on the boats. We walked to the tiny park and chatted up a guy with a canoe strapped to his 70s Volvo...and we thought "That Dude is Awesome!"
Canoe + old Volvo = Mark and Tressie ! therefore ...awesome! but that's Sunday.

Back home in the late afternoon to continue the party. We didn't have a party like in years past. Low volume right now. So, linen jacket and slacks, Brooks Brothers, as is the shirt. Vintage 50s bow tie....a real Bow tie. It's easy. Just tie a bow. Like in the movies!

Cocktails while dressing....and a tiny glimpse of the new living room...there will be some blogging about the new home and decor next week...

Plaid Sperry slip-ons...and a sweet shot of the most amazing mirror....

He decided to tuck the bow tie in his jacket pocket just before we took off for dinner at Harbor Lights...
We're often overdressed for Tacoma...we're ok with that...but it was a bit hot for the tie.

So off to Harbor Lights.....we love Harbor Lights....not just that they serve real alcohol in the drinks and that the food is good.....but we love it because it has a old-time warpiness there. It looks like time stopped in 1979. We like that.

The bar is "decorated" in Jim Beam bottles. Tacky boat and fish things. Lots of drunk lawyers and middle-aged ladies who still tease their hair in an updo and spray the crap outta it with AquaNet. They drive Cadillacs and wear high heels. They still smoke but not during dinner any more.
The servers and bartenders are mostly professionals. There are some younger folks as wait staff and they still need to learn how to serve as a profession. We miss Joan who has retired, as has Rose, though Mary was still there to take our drink orders.
It does not escape my esteem that the wall in the foyer has framed and autographed pictures of the 2 greatest male actors of all time......
Bob Denver and Ray Walston!!

You may remember Ray Walston as this guy......

We arrived early and got a corner table right on the water! So beautiful...many sailboats gliding by and the parachute sail people were flying high!

We ordered clams and clams and drinks and clams and clams, and then some mussels.

Dinner done, I drove home and then we took off walking to 1022.

I love my multi-colored boat shoes!

One last pic before we head out the door.

Arrived, and waiting for the first cocktail of the evening. Mark drank copious amounts of brandy. It is wonderful to sit outside. I hope the fire pit comes back and we can sit outside come the rainy season.
We love it because we can bring our dog for a walk and have a drinkie and walk home. Isn't that what local is all about?

I had the basil vodka cocktail, the death cocktail, and finally, when Matt arrived it was dark and warm and the full moon was shining bright!
It was a glorious evening.......

Matt's sweet Volvo....and look!

He's got Double Rainbow decals on the back windows! All original OG 70s rainbows! He rules.

A few shots of the really big tree, the moon , the neighborhood.
Then we rode home with Matt in the Volvo since we only live about 7 blocks away from his house.
Dreamtime.
The next morn we loaded (the royal We) the canoe on top of the wagon and took off for its 2010 maiden voyage at Wapato park...

This park used to be so pretty....it looked like a resort of the 1920s back in the 80s when my kids were young. We used to go all the time to swim or just walk around. The City of Tacoma has allowed the lake to putrify into a toxic algae stew. No one can swim there anymore it is so toxic. Thanks Assholes!
But we launched anyway and paddled around for a bit. The patches held real well..yeah!

Since the day was getting real hot we headed for home and crashed.
It was a low-key birthday, this one.

I think the song of the day was Bali Hai...That's the movie South Pacific where Ray Walston and Mitzi Gaynor are pictured in above.....(if you have never seen it...please do!)......our day was beautiful...another world...on the water....melancholy...but treasured all the same........

It's Red Hot with Cool cocktails........

Not that Red Hot...Erik said, and I agree, since I've been saying this myself for oh....27 years...the way to make money in Tacoma is to sell booze !

Any moron can make a lot of money in Tacoma just by selling you beer...and cocktails...... and if they toss in a limp hot dog...you love it !!!!

OK, to that end...went camping again...the pics are below...I tried to make my tent look like a Bedouin...I need more paisley and sparkle but it's a Good start.
then we bought dozens of oysters ($12.00) fresh from Carl's farm on Marrowstone Island........
see Mark cooking...then we drank many cocktails ($9.00) and ate many oysters....
prices of great dining while camping is because, we cooked and mixed ourselves instead of going to fancy schmancy restaurant...
The sunsets! Sunsets are one of my favorite things that the planet does....

OK, back to work!!
Many things in funkoma vintage are 50% off !!!
the RED X sale goes thru the first week of August, when the bulk of new fall stuff arrives... (there's some new fall stuff out already...)

Cleaned and moved and set up the Cocktail Party.......
Gold velvet furniture...
Gold and Fiberglass lamps...
Fringe dresses, lots of sequins....
Ruffle shirts and dressy jackets for the guys...

******* BIRTHDAY CAMPING ********

Random Notes: Vodka, Portland, Tacoma....

1. Vodka. always OK with me. I wonder if SevenOhWonder down below will trade vintage for vodka...the 3 dollar Martini.....Marketing Genius! We've dined there 2 times because Derek/X133 gave a recommendation......and he was right. Super excellent food, swell waitress...with just the right amount of sass (Liesel)...and besides...the view...and oh, 3 Dollar Martinis....

2. Went to Portland last week...stayed at the Mark Spencer...they love Dogs !!(word up Tacoma, you suck in the pet/hotel department)...So we got settled in and walked around the Pearl and the fringe of the Pearl...yes, the Pearl is sometimes too polished for my taste, but never fear, Portland hardly ever screws it up so bad, that it alienates the very people that make Portland so beloved....
ergo: Within blocks of our hotel, is Ace Hotel, and The Joyce Hotel, and The Kent Hotel...Ace is space deluxe, but downbeat on the decor...spare,indie and a bit too polished.

The Joyce, and the Kent.......oh yes. A hotel from my childhood. Shabby, decrepit and the place for the poor, the adventurous, and the traveling youth to stay. All great cities have these flophouses because not everyone at every time wants/needs/can afford a deluxe stay/place.
oh, and I get a big kick outta Joyce/Kent...my big brother's name is Kent...his wife is named Joyce!!!

2a. Here is Mark, Tigger and our new friend, Alexander, sitting in front of the Half and Half...drinking coffee on the fuckin' sidewalk (Tacoma, take notes!). Alexander was all about vintage photography and vintage bikes.

He is gonna ride in the 42Ride, a cross-country bike ride to promote bike-riding (duh) and 42Below Vodka. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. a street view. vibrant,eh? yup. Bicycle Film Festival website...

3. Tacoma. BEST Monkey Party ever. Who was in the Bell Tower? Who was on the roof and flipping you off? That's for me to know....and you to find out......

Tacoma, You are not as cool as you think you are....

So, before the Mix was the Mix, before Jonathan bought Ida's and rivaled the Slutstone for gays/drink......in dt Tacoma, we were there, drinking and tipping heavy. Because they do Not serve food, we (and many others) went next door to psp...Spreading the Wealth and Being Local......so Jonathan always made it clear to his staff that it was cool to leave the pizza box as a courtesy to ...the fucking people who pay the bills........the patrons who spend and drink....
So tonight, the first time I ever even ever, left a pizza box, bartenderess Yelled at me walking out the door.......HEY TAKE YOUR PIZZA BOX!!!!!
So I did. and tossed in the street. then a tiny fella picked it up and brought it to me...so I tossed it in the trashcan.
Point? When is it OK to piss off a patron? When is OK to (try) to embarrass a HEAVY TIPPER, bitch?
Never again at the MIX.
You are not the only bar in the downtown area.
This is not the only bar that has recently pissed me off. A new bar up on the eastside kicked out my friend Chris because he's black, and so , of fucking course, he's a drug dealer........so ....screw you. We'll drink at Fergies where we are treated like gold.
You know, Mark and I never had any trouble at any bar in Tacoma, ever until you all began thinking you are Cool.......
Word up. Not.
You are in Tacoma. As am I.
Clearly you fucked up and ended up here.
If you had it really going on....
You'd be elsewhere.
Love, Tressie

UPDATE...and an answer to crenshaw's comment in the comment section...
Word Up, Samantha came in the shop and apologized for her rudeness. I think that is wonderful, and apology accepted !
****I love this dirty little town...I loved it just fine. What's with this sudden attitude?
I don't get this at Harbor Lights...never ever and I could tell you stories...El Groucho, who might have reason to be uppity, has always treated Mark and I swell! Even when Glen had to send his burger back for more cooking, even when the giggling was too loud (celebrate!) the staff was Divine! If they felt disdain, they never ever showed us...
I'm not a hipster, not a yuppie...just that weird Creative Class resident that can't be put in a box...
These observations crenshaw, I'm sure, will fall on deaf ears....there is no need to be arrogant or mean...tho I'll admit, I am p.o.'d ...and Tacoma, truth hurts. If you were a flesh and blood child, and you are acting like one right now, I'd put you on phone restriction and give you a few extra chores. And make you write Tressie an apology.

Just to name names, the Crown bar flipped attitude...Maxwells was right on the edge, and I can't do Silverslut anymore, ugh. Sea Grill was r.u.d.e. 2 years ago Stanley's had some poorly trained staff, and I called out the manager on the rotten service...He bent over backwards to make it right, and I've been a repeat customer since that time............
I have more...I try to support new biz as well as the old favorite haunts...the ones the kids call "dives"...as they Lifestyle Tour my actual life in their spare time. I was just telling a girl tonight that both of my oldest kids worked at The Starvester, oh, about nearly 19 years ago...

This is a big issue with me for a few reasons, one is that I am working class and so is wait staff...I heartily respect them and reward good service, since minimum wage sucks...my mom had a restaurant/bar and I spent much of my childhood peeling potatoes, washing beer glasses and chores chores chores....and let's not forget Steilacoom Forge Deli....mine.

Let's hope when some new blood gets on the city council, they show some Common Sense towards the Common Man...and stop acting like Nellie on Little House on the Prairie....and maybe we'll see some Trickle Down old-fashion kindness and respect in our town again...

(yes I was gonna drive back up and pick up my box from the street, after I loaded Jasper,Glen and Mark in my car, to drive home..I was sober and only being a bit dramatic!)(gee. I think I actually have made another post)**************

SOTA...Art, Fun & Music

Saturday the 15th........So we went to the SOTA Theater to see Our Town by Thornton Wilder
.....acted by some preternaturally talented young folks.....superb!
It's a little play with all the big subjects in it.
-- Thornton Wilder in a letter to Gertrude Stein, 1937

It was also John's birthday (14 !!!) so we went.......... since , you know me, I love the arts!
I've vowed to see more live plays......to hell with the budget......

I'm doing my part to A) Pump the Economy.....and B) Support the Arts.......

And now, it's your turn.

So much to do in Tacoma now. It used to be: bowling, homework, and a bath on Saturday. Not no more!!
I really wanted to go to The Helm show.....but alas.
And music and booze was at The Tempest.
And I'd like to just point out that neither SOTA, The Helm, The Tempest.....were here for 23 years after I moved here........How did I survive? How did my children grow up and not become crackheads?

So for John's birthday, we did more sedate activites......ate Sushi.......he got a brand new VINTAGE Polaroid camera........

...... children are a drag.....what with birthdays and Washington State Liquor laws being what they are......
I grew up in my mom's bar....surrounded by drunks, drinking, bar food eating, and bad words and it didn't do me a bit of harm.
Made me Salty tho.
It's just asinine to keep kids away from venues where music is played.....and booze is drunk......if the kids are with the parents.........
Hells Bells.....that happens right here in Tacoma, at home, in front of the children everyday.
And in Spanaway too........A little Metallica....A little Red bull/Vodka/Schmidt Ice.
Now that Obama is our president (almost..) maybe we can become more cosmopolitan.......more in love with life.......celebrate more......hate less..........

What's Up Buttercup?

I closed down the New Frontier.....that bartender thinks I'm a troublemaker....but I was hardly tipsy.....just real happy and so funny to be there with you kids, and Mark and Murph.....I live just across the railroad tracks ya know.
So we're sitting there enjoying the very nice Martinis in the squatty glasses....and who do I spy......my swell pal, Michael.....so to get his attention, because clearly yelling "Michael" wasn't working fast enough....
so I starting slinging micro-milliliters of vodka at him.......all I had left in the bottom of my glass was the tiniest bit of alcohol in there along with the lemon twist .........
then the bartender came over as if a great wrong had occurred....."Do you need a wipedown? he asked. No, I got it.......as I pulled a slightly used tissue from the bottom of my purse, and dabbed the table dry. Geez, buddy, trust me, I can be much more entertaining......on a lot less booze.
I was dancing to the jukabox, but I wasn't table dancing..I save that for the gay bars, because they know a Queen when they see one.........
The New Frontier is very pretty and glossy and rough and mixed up. I'm a bit tired of Old Corporate Logos as Ironic Design Elements.......
While Mark and I were at the shop on Friday cleaning and moving stuff around, who did my wandering eyes spy? Bender!!!
It's so much fun for us old-timers to run into each other at places that are not "events" .....I expect to see ya'll at a Big To Do......it's the everyday stuff that makes me happy.....
So, Halloween party at the shop.......
And save the dates......
I expect to be a doing the Tacoma Winterfest on Dock Street in mid December, 13/14......
And.....
Heidi and Fewster have consented to come back and play for Us and You at the shop on December's Artwalk evening......whatever day that is.....
now, some pretty pictures.......

I Semi-French Kissed The Helm....

Because I love them so........tho sometimes the art laughs at me.....but we are in couples therapy and it will all be fine......And that is as good a reason as you need to attend the Fundraising Event they will hold soon. Date tba.......

Random Events during my huge move. I haven't seen my children or my grandchildren for a long time and I miss them so much. I wish I could Jeannie blink and get the rest of my stuff moved....but alas...I am not a Genie.....I am a Queen.

When Murphi was here Mark and Murry and I went to Masa to see him and stuff. Well, he (Murphi) is such a damn Rock Staaar, that we didn't get much face time with him. I did get to hug him hugely in his cashmere Izod sweater. NY is so lucky and Tacoma is poorer for his move away, but it is best for him. Perhaps someday our boy can come home.........

I'd never been to Masa.....I'm sorry, but fancy fancy restaurants in Tacoma make me giggle...but you know what I think about Prentiousness!!
I will call you out on that Each and Every time I smell it.....so knock it off!
Masa Smelled Good !!!! Once I found out the band was friends of Murphi (fom) they suddenly improved !
Masa smells like BBQ'd Spaniards and Axe Body Spray.

With Best Friends and Partners, we went to dinner at Harbor Lights to celebrate 11 Years of Glam Marriage ..........And Harbor Lights used to be our Comfort Restaurant......No More!!!!!!
Anthony's has slowly squeezed all CHARM out of H L......it was such a f'n GENERIC seafood restaurant experience, Mark and I won't be back to eat......
boring food, cut corners everywhere, the quality was OK, but boring boring boring boring.
And I am so PISSED OFF ABOUT THIS...
Where do people get off thinking they have to "IMPROVE" everything??? Some things are fine the way they are. I expect that NEXT they will ditch the fabulous Kitschy sign in favor of BORING CORPORATE GENERIC sign.

I don't share with you where my personal private favorite places to go and have fun and drinks.......but 2 words.......Flying Boots on 38th.......

Bye for now. I don't have new pics, I don't even know where my camera is right now....I misplaced it!!

Come and visit us in our new digs..
712 Broadway, Baby!!!

I'm Wearing My Dock Street T Shirt...

and TacomaMama........posts about the new menu......please don't ruin it.....
I was gonna wear my ONE and ONLY Exit 133 T shirt today.....but I haven't trashed it artistically yet.........Just saying....I'd show you a pic, but I'm shy....you'll have to see it yourself.....Dock st needs more good places to eat.....tho I am partial to Dock Street Landing.....bar and grill.....the T Shirt and the bar........

So What Tacoma-made or Tacoma-centric clothing choices did you make today??? Mall purchases don't count.....But purchases from small businesses do...and anything you shoplifted will also count towards your final score........(bonus points for dancing to Darrell Data...and signing up for his email list)

City Arts Love Me Best......

So the Volcrapo won't deliver to me......But I was first to get the NEW City Arts mag in all of Tacoma.
So eat me.
And because I'm a nice person , I saved all the old issues from months back for them.
.......................oh yeah, me and my neighbors are in it.......................
Now I do know that giving away freebies and deeeeep discounts is nice. This is how my day started:
First I read this......Retro fashion guide makes navigating Web easier
in the News Tribune.....(who loves me..since I've been in the paper a few times, as well as my kids and my husband...)
and I know for a fact.....golly Life is Weird ! that at least one of the online ebay sellers she profiles in the article is a crook and a half.......
see, I 've been selling on feebay for a long time and I know vintage clothes and Most Important ! I don't lie.......I have no ability to bullshit you. I'm a very bad actress.
So Can you say IRONY ???
I emailed the writer of the article......and directed her to the link....of the ensuing discussion on the topic of crooky online vintage clothing sellers........I got a lovely reply......Which is more than I can say for the Volcrapo.

And on and on and on it goes.........
So.......
on to new business........
been to Woody's yet? me neither.
But I was out with Gio and pals the other night......
and he said "lets go to the HUB!".......
but we didn't we made plans to go, but not yet.and now the chef and stuff have left...so what the Hey !!!!

Today the effervescent AMY, the lovely JESS and amy's daughter, the adorable x 10 Isabella came to funkoma today.........
